Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
The Grandparenting Program, a component of the Family Caregiver Support Program, can assist you if you find yourself in a kinship care situation. Under the Program, kinship care is defined as an older adult providing care to a related child under the age of 18. The older adult could be a grandparent, aunt, uncle or other relative, but not the child’s parent.
You may apply for the program, which begins with an assessment through the county Area Agency on Aging to determine what benefits best meet the needs of you and the child.
Benefits include:
- Counseling
- Education
- Financial information
- Funds to be used toward services and supplies
In addition, one-time grants of up to $2,000 may be given to qualified families to modify the home or purchase assistive devices to accommodate the family.
Eligibility
Eligibility for the Grandparenting Program is determined by your county Area Agency on Aging.
The Grandparenting Program takes a cost-sharing approach; income-eligible families may receive up to $200 per month to help with out-of-pocket expenses.
